Val Thorens is one of Europe's best ski resorts. Begun in 1971, in the 2011/12 season it's celebrating its 40th anniversary. As the highest resort in Europe, it often has some of the best snow in the Alps. The ski area caters to all levels of skiers, with an extensive beginners' area, and kilometres of varied pistes for intermediates and experts. If you ever want to go further afield, you can ski the other valleys that make up the 3 Valleys ski area - Méribel and Courchevel. You can access charming off piste itineraries from Val Thorens's lifts.
The lifts are fast and modern, as the resort regularly invests in upgrading and renewing them. In summer 2011, they built the new Funitel de Thorens, and 2 new pistes that go with it.
